Risk management in the healthcare industry has become an important area of concern for hospital governing boards, administrators, medical practitioners, insurers, consumer organizations and other key stakeholders. The potential for risk permeates all aspects of health care, including medical mistakes, electronic record keeping (or lack thereof), provider organizations and facility management. While patient safety and quality care continues to remain paramount in the health care services, increased levels of accidents due to medical errors and negligence (and some causing death) are continuing to be reported each year. Risk management in health care considers patient safety, quality assurance and patients’ rights.

Introduction

Managing the unexpected is an essential everyday concern in high-risk organizations such as hospitals and nursing homes. Risk management for healthcare entities can be defined as an organized effort to identify, assess, and reduce, where appropriate, risk to patients, visitors, staff and organizational assets. In its best form risk management will help to pro-actively identify and manage the risks that can impact a hospital and other healthcare providers.

The Strategic Risk Management in Healthcare workshop will cover normal operating health and medical risks as well as occupational safety and security risks; supply chain risks; legal and administrative risks; and process and systemic risks that impact on patient care. It will also include the management of the strategic or business risks associated with running a public or private hospital or health offices and includes financial, ethical, business continuity and information technology risks.

This 2-day workshop will focus on risk identification and management, implementing effective clinical governance and clinical risk management practices and the introduction of an effective risk management culture that can assist in improving the delivery of Health Care in the Caribbean.
